Latest Turtle News

Yes, its been AGES since I posted last!  Who would have guessed that working full-time outside the home and having a toddler to care for in the home would mean so little free time to do such things as blogging?  Certainly not me.

The first big update is that starting at the end of the month, Turtle will be going to an in-home daycare provider.  This will give Turtle a chance to play with kids -something she desperately wants to do, and give Grandma a chance to heal after her surgery.

Turtle has also finally figured out how to get her pants on all by herself.  This makes for some interesting clothing combinations!  She still likes to put her pants on her head -I think she likes the feel of the legs draping down.  Maybe it is time for a funny jester hat?

We also have a potential transitional object:  Froggy.  Frogg y is (obviously) a stuffed frog.  He is very squishy, super soft, and just the right size for hugging while falling asleep.  We are not at the point of needing Froggy at bedtime, she just prefers to have him around at that time.

The last big news is that Turtle finally asked to use the potty and then WENT POTTY!

Current Favorite Turtle Sayings:

  • I have an idea....
  • I'm not ______ any more! Hmph (followed by folding her arms and giving a little head shake on the hmph)
  • I'm sad (whenever she doesn't get her way)
  • Can I help you?
  • Oh sure!
  • Oh gracious
  • Sit sofa! (English translation: I want to sit on the sofa with you)
  • Pleeeeeease? (accompanied by hands in prayer position, often clapping & jumping at the same time as begging)
Current Favorite Turtle Activities
  • Bouncing......on the bed, the sofa
  • Jumping
  • Dancing
  • Running
  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Opening containers/packages
  • Turning on lights
  • General "I help you" in whatever you do

Montessori Halloween

Halloween, Victorian Witch on Pumpkin

I have usually shied away from big Halloween celebrations in my classroom.  Mostly because the day after Halloween at school is NOT FUN.  Crabby kids who were up far too late and consumed far too much sugar do not make pleasant students.

But this year, I am rethinking a bit.  I don't want to have a "Halloween Party", but as it is a half-day for school, we could still have a fun art project, an activity (or two) and a special snack.  But no costumes.  They'll be wound up enough as it is!

Part of the rethink is due to a couple of books I found.  One is Holidays Around The World: Celebrate Halloween: With Pumpkins, Costumes, and Candy  It is a great informational book for kids about the origins of Halloween.  It also includes traditions from around the world.  The photos and factual information on Halloween make it a great addition to any classroom.

The other is called Pumpkin Jack.  It is a great story of how a pumpkin decays, self-sows, and comes back again the next year to produce more pumpkins.  Perfect complement to a life-cycle study!
In case you are wondering, I do believe that Turtle will get her first experience Trick-or-Treating this year.  Daddy should be home that evening so he can take her to a few of the neighborhood houses while I handle our own door.  She had so much fun playing with the ballerina items at the Children's Museum, so I think she will be a dancer this year!
